1. Is there a food effect with Zanaflex Capsules® (tizanidine hydrochloride)?

Yes. Food has complex effects on tizanidine pharmacokinetics, which differ with the different formulations.2,5

Peak Plasma levels of tizanidine when administered with food:

  • Increase 30% when taking tablets.2
  • Decrease 20% when taking Zanaflex Capsules®.2

These changes may result in increased adverse events or delayed/more rapid onset of activity, depending upon the nature of the switch.2,5 Please click here for further information.

2. What is the maximum daily dose?

The maximum daily dose is 36 mg. Experience with single doses exceeding 8 mg and daily doses exceeding 24 mg is limited.2

3. What is the common dosing regime?
  • The recommended starting dose for Zanaflex Capsules® (tizanidine hydrochloride) is 4 mg.2
  • The dose can be gradually increased in 2 or 4 mg increments until optimum effect is achieved.2
  • Zanaflex Capsules® (tizanidine hydrochloride) should be taken every 6 to 8 hours, to a maximum of 3 doses in 24 hours.2
  • The maximum daily dose is 36 mg. Experience with single doses exceeding 8 mg and daily doses exceeding 24 mg is limited.2
